What are Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders include mental health conditions that are characterized by excessive fear, worry, or anxiety and related behavioral disturbances.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (G.A.D.)

This disorder is characterized by excessive worry about a number of events and activities for at least six months. The symptom is mostly accompanied by a group of physical and psychological symptoms, such as muscle tension, restlessness, irritability and fatigue.

Panic Disorder

This disorder involves experiencing recurrent and unexpected panic attacks. A panic attack is an abrupt surge of intense fear or discomfort that typically involves physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath.

Social Anxiety Disorder

This disorder is marked fear or anxiety related to social situations in which a person's concern that he or she will be judged, embarrassed, or humiliated by others leads to avoidance of such situations and results in impaired functioning in everyday life.

Specific Phobias

These entail fear or anxiety about a specific object and situation. Anxiety or fear is out of proportion to the actual danger posed by the specific object or situation. Phobic object and situations are actively avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety.

Treatment Approach

The management of anxiety disorders typically involves Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), medications and lifestyle Adjustments.
