PTSD is characterized by exposure to a traumatic event (an accident, violence or natural event) leading to symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories of the traumatic event, irritability, sleep disturbances, exaggerated startle response. Other symptoms include negative thoughts or mood, such as feelings of guilt or detachment from others. Many people with PTSD also experience co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse.
